The idea for the cover illustration comes from the personality of the author but also the character of the book. Sanja is known in her city for her cordiality and bright red hair.

The very idea of the illustration is a red-haired young girl dancing in the wind (Sanja in her younger days) in a wide field in front of which is a tree with a large canopy that symbolizes wisdom.

The illustration is done in pastel colors, with very little contrast to evoke all that effect of memory and retelling found in the book.
